EMISSARY was a solo exhibition by Hu Zeqian, presented at SWANFALL GALLERY, London. Born in 1994 and currently based in Washington, D.C., Hu works with a distinctive visual language that moves between historical imagery, personal memory, illusion, and contemporary reality. Drawing from historical landscapes, museum collections, magazines, vintage photographs, and handcraft traditions, his paintings reassemble fragments of memory into layered narratives that appear both nostalgic and speculative.

The exhibition presented Hu’s latest body of work created during his residency in Berlin, marking a development in both his conceptual approach and technical language. Through slow, meticulous hand-painting, Hu achieves colour gradients and sharp-edged forms that recall digital precision while remaining rooted in traditional painterly processes. EMISSARY reflected on the emotional distance between past and present, individual and collective memory, and the possibility of reimagining contemporary reality through images charged with both longing and hope.
